It took me a while to train for this but as it was a birthday goal I'm used to starting training from a long way off. I like to set physical birthday goals as they remind me that as I get older, there are lots of things I can do to take good health with me.

As a child I had been sick quite often. Running got me breathless pretty quick and I didn't feel particularly strong. One time I had the following in reasonably close order leaving my parents extremely worried... glandular fever, scarlet fever, pleurisy and finally pneumonia ending up in hospital with one collapsed lung and the other not looking too hot. At the age of 14 I discovered pushups.
The first time I realised that my pushups routines were making any difference was when I went to the school gym and lifted a bar with weights the first 15 rugby team were training with. No one saw me and no one believed me. Ultimately, it didn't really matter because,
I knew.... and I also knew how I did it. Training.
I set birthday goals and other physical goals each year to help me keep my focus. And pushups will always be in there. Then at the age of 32 a friend invited me to do a 5km "fun" run....
Since then, I've run thousands of kilometers and lifted thousands of kilos. I"ve surprised myself many times. For example, at the age of 40 I challenged myself to do 100 non stop pushups. I ended up doing 500, plus 125 one handed. I had learned the secret of training.
Recently I did 100 pushups at the age of 60. And I'm wondering if I can push myself to do more. We all have our limits and I've picked up some injuries testing mine because I pushed past the pain zone (there's good pain and bad pain) into what I call the stupid zone. Don't go there. Learn when to stop. But don't stop setting goals.
Overall, I'm thankful for the opportunities I've had to explore and enjoy good health and fitness. Still learning, I owe a lot for the many tips I've received from others such as power lifters, body builders, sports tutors and students, newbies. I've put this pushups website together to hopefully inspire and challenge you to explore new limits.
To improve health and fitness in strength, endurance, power, weight loss or aerobic capacity there is one word you need to understand:
TRAINING! Training = (a) intensity/activity (b) rest (c) repeat!
And any serious pushups goal is going to involve some training
Start with a sensible activity based on your current fitness and age. A 15 minute walk. A pushup against a wall. Increase/decrease (a) or (b) so you can repeat, repeat, repeat... or no results... get the idea!
Training gets results. SO START YOUR PUSHUPS TRAINING NOW!
